Good morning, Alejandra.  I’m calling from St. John’s hospital because your doctor has requested for you to have a pelvic and transvaginal ultrasound.  I’ve scheduled your appointment for February 11 at 7:30AM, but you’ll need to arrive 30 minutes early to register at central registration to complete the registration process.  Please be sure to bring a photo ID, your insurance card, and your preferred method of payment for the exam if you have a copay.  We offer a 20% discount for same-day pre-payment of services.

You’ll also need to drink 32 ounces of water 1 hour before your appointment, which is about the size of two regular water bottles.  In other words: you’ll be arriving at 7:00AM, but you’ll have to make sure you’ve drank your 32 ounces of water at or before 6:30AM.

Please don’t use the bathroom after you drink your water because you will need to have a full bladder for the first half of this test.  The radiology tech (see note 1)  will allow you to use the restroom before beginning the transvaginal portion of the exam.  Please be advised that if you use the bathroom before we are able to complete the pelvic portion of the ultrasound, you will be asked to drink more water and wait in the waiting area until your bladder is full again.

Make sure you’re wearing a two-piece outfit when you come to your appointment. Not only will we need to be able to lift up your shirt to be able to perform the pelvic ultrasound, you will also need to get undressed from the waist down for the transvaginal portion of the exam.

If you’re on your period the day of the exam, we will still be able to perform it as long as you feel comfortable enough to do so.  Many patients find the exam is actually less uncomfortable while menstruating.  You will be asked to remove any tampon you’re using before the transvaginal portion of the exam, so be sure to bring a change of tampon or pad for after the exam if you are on your period.
