For Sprinters who would like to receive a Certificate of Acknowledgement, this Mock Exam should be completed before May 15th, 2025 at 11:00 p.m. EST. Keep in mind that all the Interpreter Sprint practice materials, daily recordings, and other resources, including the non-certificate version of the Mock Exam will be available after this deadline, but no certificates will be issued.

Whether you’re planning to get certified, preparing for a job interview, or simply curious, this assessment will help you evaluate your interpreting skills across various medical specialties. By the end of the assessment, you will receive a grade with a breakdown of your performance in each section.

Let’s take a few minutes to become familiar with the structure of this self-assessment.

You’ll interpret four medical scenarios in the consecutive mode: Primary Care, Diabetes, Orthopedics, and OBGYN.

To complete them, you will need the following:
- A recorder (either on your computer, cellphone, or another device) to record your renditions.
- Pen and paper to take notes
- A quiet, distraction-free environment to help you focus on interpreting to the best of your abilities
- A positive attitude! 🙂 Take a deep breath, relax, and have fun! If you make a mistake, try to not let it affect you. Instead, you can focus on completing one question at a time in the best way you can. Doing this will not only help you improve your interpreting performance but also make you a better test-taker in the future.
- You should have set aside 1 to 2 hours to complete this assessment in one sitting.

Each ”question” in this assessment is really the lines of the doctor, patient, or person with Limited English Proficiency. Answering each “question” consists of 3 steps:

Step 1. Interpret. In this step, you will play the recording of the lines of the doctor, patient, or person with Limited English Proficiency, listen to the audio, take notes at the same time, and then record your rendition in your other language. The steps may be slightly different depending on your language pair.

The audio will always be in English for the doctor’s lines, and you will interpret them into Spanish.
For the patient, you will see a recording in English and Spanish. You will always listen to the recording in Spanish and interpret into English.
You will see images of doctors, patients, and individuals with Limited English Proficiency to help you identify who is speaking, and you should always record each rendition using your own recording device, e.g., your computer, cellphone, physical recorder, etc.

The audio will always be in English for the doctor’s lines, and you will interpret them into your other language.
For the patient, you will see a recording in English and Spanish. You will always ignore the Spanish recording and listen to the recording in English. You also have two options:

Repeat the patient’s lines in English. This will help you assess your memory skills and practice your tone.
Interpret the patient’s lines into your other language. This will help you assess your memory and terminology skills. Keep in mind that in real life, you will often interpret patient utterances from your other language into English.

Whether you choose option 1 or 2, it’s best to be consistent with your choice throughout the assessment to have an accurate grade. The grade will be representative of your memory skills, which are essential for consecutive interpretation.
You will also see images of doctors, patients, and individuals with Limited English Proficiency to help you identify who is speaking, and you should always record each rendition.

To ensure that this self-assessment is helpful and representative of your consecutive interpreting skills, please read carefully the following Do’s and Dont’s.

Don’t

✅ Imagine that you have up to 6 replays from start to finish. When you didn’t understand or remember the source message, you can replay the audio. However, doing so will deduct 1 replay from your entire assessment.

✅Keep a list of the replays you have used so far to know how many replays you have left.

✅Use your replays wisely. For example, if you can’t remember 1 or 2 words, it might be better to save the replay for a more challenging message. However, it makes sense to use the replay when you feel like you didn’t understand or remember most of the message.

✅Although the assessment is challenging, you can simply try to do your best and have a positive mindset. It will help you improve your performance and learn a lot about your interpretation strengths and weaknesses.

❌ Do not replay any audios after you have exhausted your 6 replays. Otherwise, your grade will not be accurate.

❌ Do not read the written script before interpreting. Otherwise, you run the risk of not exercising your memory as you would in real life.
